Over the past few days, everyone’s become a teeny bit obsessed with a game named Wordle.

As the name suggests, it’s a word game. Each day, it produces a grey block gives players six attempts to guess the word of the day – by starting with a word of their own, and the game highlighting the correct letters.

If it sounds a bit like the ITV game show Lingo, that’s because it’s not a million miles off.

But cleverly and also annoyingly, Wordle only offers up one word a day, so you can’t keep playing at your leisure.

However, you can scratch the word game itch with one of these addictive online puzzles…

The best online word games and word game apps

Wordscapes

With its seemingly never-ending levels, Wordscapes is one the best word game apps available.

It’s part-crossword, part anagram-unscrambler. You’ll be given a wheel of letters, and your job is to connect them to create a word.

When you’re successful, the word will appear in the crossword – and you can try to determine the other words.

Wordscapes Uncrossed

Uncrossed is another version of the Wordscapes app – with slightly different games and formats, designed to relax you.

There are 3,000 games on this app, including anagram puzzles. However, they probably won’t relax you that much – unless you pay the one-off fee to remove annoying pop-up ads.

WordCollect

Word Collect gives you a small group of letters, and you’ve got to find all the possible combinations.

There are 2,500 levels, so it’ll certainly help you pass the time – especially if you’re travelling by bus or train.

New York Times Spelling Bee

If you typically find the New York Times crossword to be too much of a challenge, why not try their online Spelling Bee puzzle?

Launched online in 2018, it provides you with a honeycomb of seven letters. Your aim is to make as many words of four letters or more as you can.

If you get them all, you’ll officially be the game’s ‘Queen Bee’.

Wordhub

Play yourself for fun, play against the clock for a challenge, or connect with your friends to find out who is the true wordsmith.

There’s a secret seven letter word to get in every round, by the way. Good luck!

Words With Friends

The name ‘Words With Friends’ probably rings a bell. Before Wordle went viral, this was the buzzed-about word game.

The game is all about finding the perfect word to play on the board, collecting points for each letter you place. You can battle with friends or random players – but you can also play it in solo mode.

Good for brain training, this one. There’s a classic version and a newer app, called Word With Friends 2.

Skribbl.io

While it’s not a straightforward ‘word’ game, you do have to guess the word.

On pressing ‘play’ you’ll join a game room with random players, who each take turns sketching out a word (using their keypad or mouse).

Once you know what it is, type the word in the chat. The first player to get it gets the most points, and the ultimate winner is the player with the highest score.

You will have a turn at drawing, too, by the way.

Bonza Word Puzzle

Serious word puzzle lovers will enjoy the Bonza Word Puzzle app.

It bills itself as ‘part wordsearch, jigsaw and trivia’, which is accurate. You’ll take part in all sorts of word games, including dragging and dropping pieces to fit words together.

You can take part in pre-programmed puzzles, but avid users can create their own puzzles to share, too. Exciting.

Metro Crossword

Sometimes, you just can’t beat a good, old-fashioned crossword puzzle.

And if you haven’t been able to pick up a paper copy of Metro, you can always do the daily crossword online, too.

If you like number puzzles, there’s also Sudoku to play while you’re visiting Metro.co.uk, too.

Leixgo

This browser-based word game by the US dictionary website is surprisingly enjoyable and relaxing.

You’ll be given a clue, and you’ll have to spell out the word you think the clue represents. You can’t, however, just pick any old letter from the options.

You have to ensure your answer forms a ‘chain’ of letters. Worth a go!

Alphabear 2

Alphabear 2, also called Alphabear: Words Across Time, is definitely not your typical word game app.

For one thing, you’ll collect cute square-headed bears. The more word puzzles you solve, the more bears you get. You’ll also hop around the Alphabear world to find the puzzles.

Wordalot

Wordalot is a crossword puzzle with a difference – it comes with a picture clue every time!

It also has 1,000 levels to complete, so it’s another one you’ll play again and again.
