Do Video Games Have an Effect on Reaction Time and Reflexes?

Abstract

Reflex based games require players to create an adaptable behavior to quickly respond to rapid visual and auditory stimuli, and to switch back and forward between diverse objectives of the game. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between playing video games and cognitive abilities; reaction time and reflexes in particular. The experiment was done on two groups, sorted as experimental and research. Using online reflex tests titled, Human Benchmark and Brain Matrix, groups were tested in their reflexive abilities, and the results were recorded. After these tests, experimental group played the game Super Hexagon for fifteen minutes, while the control group were not exposed to any stimuli that would have an effect on their cognitive abilities. At the end of these fifteen minutes, both groups went through the same testing process. The experimental group showed a significant improvement in reaction time and reflexes, while the control group showed little to no change. In conclusion, the research showed that playing video games can effectively improve the cognitive abilities.
